Oxford's visiting scholar on campus
Jonathan Roberts
A visiting scholar exchange between Oxford College and Oxford University welcomes Jonathan Roberts, senior lecturer in English at the University of Liverpool and an associate member of the faculty of theology at Oxford University.
Roberts’ visit is supported by the Pierce Visiting Scholar Program through the Pierce Institute for Leadership and Engagement.
Roberts holds a doctor of philosophy degree from Oxford University and has primary research interests in British Romantic literature, hermeneutics, reception history and literature and the Bible.
Lectures planned
On Wednesday, Sept. 22, Roberts will present a lecture on “William Blake at the Beach: the Representation of Religious Vision” at 7 p.m. in Williams Hall at Oxford College. The lecture is free and open to the public.
On Thursday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. he will present “Hermeneutical Approaches to Literary and Religious Truth” in the Kemp Malone Library in the Callaway building on the Atlanta campus.
Scholars exchange visits
Roberts is the seventh British scholar named to the program. Each year the Pierce Institute designates one faculty member from Oxford University and one from Oxford College as Pierce Visiting Scholars.
The Oxford University scholar comes to Oxford College during the academic year for at least one week, giving public lectures, usually on both the Oxford and Atlanta campuses; teaching classes and meeting with groups of both students and faculty.
His or her Oxford College counterpart serves as on-campus host during the stay and in turn travels to Oxford University for lectures and teaching, hosted by the Oxford University designee.
The current designee from Oxford College is Lucas Carpenter, Charles Howard Candler professor of English.
